Compact Mid-Century Blue Sofa by Eames for Herman Miller from the 1970s

This classic vintage mid century modern Eames Compact Sofa Model S-473 is circa 1970. The sofa has been professionally reupholstered in a gorgeous Herman Miller blue nubby fabric. The Eames compact sofa is extremely well-built and solid. The Model S-473 sofa features a backrest with two foam pads with a reinforcing cord welting detail and urethane foam seat cushions supported by fabric-reinforced rubber webbing on a steel and wire-spring armature. The steel sofa frame is black enamel and the chrome-plated tubular steel legs have original “Insulated Domes of Silence” stainless steel glides. The sofa backrest folds up and down by removing screws for convenient storage and transport.

Charles and Ray Eames designed the Eames Sofa Compact in 1954 based on a built-in sofa the couple had designed for their Pacific Palisades home in the 1940s. This freestanding version has been in continuous production ever since. The iconic mid century design is clean and minimalist – great for small spaces and providing a modern light and airy profile in large spaces. Perfect for home or office.

Excellent vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. Newly reupholstered in Herman Miller fabric. Minor patina to frame.
