The Model 402 lounge chair or ‘Atelje’ chair was designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto in 1933 and is considered a masterpiece of modernist furniture design. The classic, well-balanced chair features graceful, sculptural lines. The inventive cantilever frame is made from flexible steam bent plywood and the cushioned seat well padded. The chair was designed for comfort and is remarkably so even by modern ergonomic standards. The slightly tilted back allows for gentle relaxation while still remaining in an upright position and the 402 chair has a more lightweight structure than the famous Aalto Tank chair and is a little taller making it of more practical use.

This particular chair made from steam bent birch was produced by Artek and can be dated from the 1930s. The vintage vinyl upholstery may be later in date. It is a stunning shade of blue and remains in excellent vintage condition. Faded stamp on chair underside reads “Aalto Design, Made in Finland” and both legs are engraved with the number “237”.

CONDITION
Excellent vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use.
